THE FIRST EVER NATIONAL LAW FEST 2019 HELD AT BUP

Dhaka, 17 September: The BUP Law and Moot Court Club (BUP-LMCC) has organized its first edition of ‘BUP National Law Fest’, from 15-17 September 2019, in the Mirpur Cantonment campus of Bangladesh University of Professionals (BUP). The Fest was inaugurated by Barrister M Amir-Ul Islam, Senior Advocate, Supreme Court of Bangladesh and the Drafter of Proclamation of Independence 1971. Brig Gen Md Siddiqul Alam Sikder, BSP, ndc, psc, Dean, Faculty of Security and Strategic Studies (FSSS) attended the opening ceremony of the Fest as the special guest, while Lt Col Siraj Uddin Ahmed, (Retd), psc, Chairman, Department of Law, BUP, moderated the ceremony.

In his speech, Barrister M Amir-Ul Islam discussed about the sanctity of constitutional governance in a country like Bangladesh. He emphasized upon ‘respect’ towards and ‘dignity’ of the human beings to be prioritized as the key instrumentals for creating a constitutional principles-based society. He acclaimed the contribution of the defense forces of Bangladesh for their valuable services in maintaining international peace and order. He congratulated and welcomed all the participants of the National Law Fest.

Brig Gen Md Siddiqul Alam Sikder stated that the Fest gives an opportunity to know law deeply for all. He also said that the fest aims to encourage the law students to get to be known and participate in creating a new beginning of communication across the country. Lt Col Siraj Uddin Ahmed highlighted the importance of leadership by the law students in legal arena. He also said that the department and the club have arranged such creative and captivating segments for the students to nurture the required skills of argumentation and advocacy. The inaugural ceremony came to an end with the exhibition of wall magazine by the participants of the Fest.

The second day of the BUP National Law Fest (16 September 2019) commenced with the Law Career Seminar where the guest speakers from academia, judiciary and international development agency, have shared their experiences and accomplishment on the issues of legal career and its challenges for the fresh law graduates.

The guest speakers included Iftekhar Mahmud, Assistant Professor, Eastern University; Kawser Ahmed, Advocate, Supreme Court of Bangladesh; and Fahmida Karim, Associate Protection Officer from UNHCR-Bangladesh.

The closing ceremony was held on 17 September, with the presence of Mr. Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain, Honorable Chief Justice of Bangladesh. Among others, Mr. Justice Sheikh Md. Zakir Hossain, Honorable Judge, High Court Division, Supreme Court of Bangladesh; Professor Dr. M Abul Kashem Muzumder, Pro-VC of BUP; and ZI Khan Panna, Advocate, Supreme Court of Bangladesh, attended ceremony as the special guests. In his speech, Honorable Chief Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain said that law students are the future lawyers and judges of the country. They will uphold the dignity and prestigious of this glorious profession. He encouraged the students to prepare with required professional skills and dedication. The ceremony ended with the certificate giving session with an excellent cultural program participated by the students of BUP.

The objective of organizing such a Law Fest was to build up the communication with other law students and to provide the law students with a platform to demonstrate their skills and endeavors. Around 500 law students from a total of 16 public and private universities have participated in the three-day Law Fest in different competition segments, i.e., law debate, book-based quiz competition, extempore speech, wall magazine, poster presentation, case presentation and some other law related events. The Fest has been one of the biggest gatherings of law students of the country in BUP.
